About The Neighborhood Partnership Network

How are Neighborhoods defined?

Neighborhoods can be hard to define. A certain place may have more than one name, or someone might define the boundaries of a neighborhood differently than his neighbors. The New Orleans City Planning Commission (CPC) defines 73 neighborhoods, the boundaries of which were created in the mid 1970’s. There are often multiple neighborhood associations and groups within these 73 neighborhoods. More recently, the CPC divided the city into thirteen (13) planning districts which include many neighborhoods. The City Planning Commission uses these planning districts frequently for planning purposes.

NPN respects the right of each neighborhood group to define its own identity, boundaries and purpose. We ask, for the sake of clarity and consistency, that each neighborhood organization identify the CPC-recognized neighborhood and planning district that their neighborhood falls into.
