Mission:

History & Mission: Our organization was formed after Hurricane Katrina to provide a voice for our area in city and state planning efforts as well as to promote the recovery of flooded areas. We aim to preserve a high quality of life for residents through the maintenance, improvement, and beautification of the community and the promotion of health, safety, and recreation.

Initiatives: We coordinated several activities to improve the neighborhood and boost the morale of its residents beginning in Feb. 2006: – Printed and sold signs that proclaimed “Rebuilding to Stay” for homeowners to place in front of their homes to declare their intentions. – Conducted resident surveys to determine who was returning to rebuild in the area, who was planning to sell their homes, and who was undecided, in order to illustrate to state and local officials that our neighborhood was viable. – We hand-painted street signs to replace those that were blown away. – We held numerous street cleanups to pick up trash/debris and to mow vacant/overgrown lots and have coordinated several landscaping projects to replace plants and trees lost to Katrina’s floodwaters on public property. – We have participated in numerous city-wide and community-specific urban planning discussions to determine how to proceed in rebuilding the area after the catastrophic impact of Katrina. – We’ve coordinated public forums for state and local political candidates so that residents could base their choices on who would serve the neighborhood best. We host a Night Out Against Crime gathering and promote a private security patrol to fight crime in the area.

Our future goals included addressing abandoned/blighted/unrepaired houses in the area. We recently conducted a survey of the neighborhood on foot to identify and map these properties, so that we can explore options. However, we need the city to enforce existing anti-blight laws and fine homeowners accordingly in our area, not just the targeted zones in the city.

Current Priorities:

  • Blight and Code Enforcement
  • Law Enforcement
  • Quality of Life, Preservation, and Zoning
